The U.S. sanctioned “35 entities and individuals that oversee Iran’s shadow banking architecture”. The Treasury Department also emphasised that “payments to the Government of Iran or the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), directly or indirectly, for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would not be authorised for U.S. persons, including U.S. financial institutions, or for U.S.-owned or -controlled foreign entities. Such payment also create significant sanctions exposure for non-U.S. persons”. It additionally issued an alert regarding “the sanctions risks associated with independent ‘teapot’ oil refineries in China… given their continued role in importing and refining Iranian crude oil”.
