Speaking after U.S. and Iranian representatives convened for negotiations in Oman, President Trump remarked: “We had very good talks… Iran looks like it wants to make a deal very badly, but we have to see what that deal is”. “They know that if they don’t need a deal the consequences are very steep”, he added. Speaking the following day, Iran’s foreign minister said Tehran was ready “for both peace and war… We will not attack neighbouring countries [if attacked by the U.S.]; rather we will target U.S. bases stationed in them”. Abbas Araghchi further maintained that “the missile issue is a purely defensive matter for us and cannot be negotiated, neither now nor in the future”.
