En route to talks in Pakistan, Vice President Vance stated that “if the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we’re certainly willing to extend the open hand. If they’re going to try to play us, then they’re going to find that the negotiating team is not that receptive”. Meanwhile, the speaker of Iran’s parliament said that “two of the measures mutually agreed upon between the parties have yet to be implemented: a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of Iran’s blocked assets… These two matters must be fulfilled before negotiations begin”. President Trump, who the previous day posited that Iran was “doing a very poor job, dishonourable some would say, of allowing oil to go through the Strait of Hormuz”, warned that “the Iranians don’t seem to realise they have no cards, other than a short-term extortion of the world by using international waterways. They only reason they are alive today is to negotiate”.
