WILPF Joins 1% for the Planet: Funding Feminist Peace for People and the Planet
We are proud to announce that WILPF is now an official Environmental Partner of 1% for the Planet, a global network of businesses and individuals who commit one percent of their sales or income to environmental solutions —supporting specifically the work of our Ecological Justice programme.
Through our Ecological Justice programme, WILPF works at the intersection of feminist peacebuilding and environmental protection, rooted in the understanding that there can be no lasting peace without ecological justice and gender equality. We advance ecofeminist solutions by integrating feminist analysis into global and local environmental advocacy—challenging systems such as militarism, capitalism, and patriarchy that exacerbate ecological destruction and disproportionately harm women and marginalised communities.
At the international level, we bring feminist and anti‑militarist perspectives to forums like UN human rights mechanisms and climate negotiations, and campaign for a just transition away from fossil fuels and redirecting military spending toward people‑centred climate solutions.
On the ground, WILPF Sections translate these principles into tangible action. For example, WILPF Cameroon’s Climate Action Project has empowered over 1,800 secondary school students across the Littoral region with environmental education and practical skills to address plastic pollution, establish environmental clubs, implement waste management systems, create school gardens, and lead awareness‑raising campaigns on Earth Day and beyond. This initiative equips young people to be actors of change in their communities and fosters long‑term commitment to environmental stewardship and climate justice.
This partnership represents a strategic evolution in the way WILPF funds its work, ensuring that we can continue our peacebuilding, human rights, and environmental justice work at a time when traditional funding streams are shrinking.
What 1% for the Planet Means for WILPF
1% for the Planet connects mission-driven nonprofits organisations with businesses committed to creating measurable positive environmental impact. Through this initiative, WILPF can now receive contributions from companies who share our commitment to protecting people and the planet.
Some might ask: does funding from businesses compromise our independence? Absolutely not.
We are clear about the tension this raises. Corporations, driven by capitalism, militarism, and colonial extraction, have played a central role in exploiting the earth for profit above people and the planet. Environmental destruction is not accidental, it is the outcome of systems that prioritise growth and militarised power over care, justice, and sustainability.
We believe it is a radical act to redistribute corporate profits toward feminist, anti-militarist, and ecological justice work. Through 1% for the Planet, resources generated within exploitative systems are redirected to movements actively working to dismantle those systems. This is redistribution, not endorsement — and it does not dilute our independence, analysis, or political demands.
Here’s What This Partnership Changes and What It Doesn’t
What it enables: Access to new resources that allow WILPF to deepen its impact, strengthen advocacy, and sustain long-term work for peace, equality, and environmental justice. It taps into collective action and shared responsibility, amplifying the impact of our feminist, planetary justice agenda.
What it doesn’t change: WILPF remains impartial, independent, and radical. We will never allow funding sources to dictate our positions or priorities. Our advocacy and analyses remain rooted in our feminist principles, challenging power structures and systemic injustice wherever they exist.
